Where an 850 ml HDPE bottle fits
850 ml is a family-format size. It appears in three predictable places:
- Family and value packs — shampoo, conditioner and body wash sold on price per litre.
- Refill and top-up formats — a bulk pack that feeds a smaller dispenser the customer keeps.
- Institutional and back-of-house — salons, gyms and hotels buying the working size rather than the guest size.
How the larger body changes the design brief
A bottle at 850 ml filled weighs roughly twice what a 400 ml one does, and that changes three decisions:
- Wall profile. The body has to resist top-load in a stacked shipper, so the profile is stiffer than a small format even though the wall itself is thin.
- Grip. A full 850 ml bottle is heavy when wet. A slight waist, a textured panel or a handle solves it — and it is far cheaper to design grip into the mold than to add a separate component later.
- Pump specification. A larger bottle with a standard pump output takes many strokes to empty. If the product is dispensed, check whether the dose per stroke still suits the customer’s habit.

The dip tube on any pump has to be cut to this bottle’s internal height. A tube specified for a 500 ml body will not draw from an 850 ml one — this is the most common mismatch at this size, and it is invisible in a spec sheet until the bottle is filled.
Decoration on a large HDPE panel
The extra surface area is an advantage: more room for brand, usage instructions and regulatory text. It also makes some decoration methods more economical per unit, because a single pass covers more product.
- Pressure-sensitive label — the flexible default for household and personal care; choose a wash-off adhesive where recyclability is a claim you make.
- Silk screen — efficient for a simple, high-contrast design at volume; needs surface treatment on HDPE.
- Shrink sleeve — full-body coverage, useful over a shaped profile, but a mixed-material sleeve complicates recycling.
- Hot stamping — a single premium accent.
One practical note specific to larger opaque bottles: any claim that relies on the consumer seeing the product cannot be made in words alone, so the label has to carry it.
Packing, stacking and shipping
At 850 ml, freight is decided by cube rather than weight. Confirm the carton count, the pallet pattern and the loaded layer height, and ask for a drop test on a packed carton before the container is loaded. If the bottle is going through a retail distribution centre, check the case dimensions against their pallet specification — a carton that is a few millimetres too tall can fail a receiving check even though the bottles are perfect.

Not always, but grip should be considered. A molded waist or a textured panel is usually enough for personal care; a full handle is rarely needed at this volume unless the product is poured rather than pumped.
Can I use the same pump as my 500 ml bottle?
The neck may match, but the dip tube will not. The tube is cut to the bottle’s internal height, so a pump specified for a shorter body will not reach the base of an 850 ml bottle.
Is 850 ml a retail or a value size?
