Can I Order Six Colours in One Run? What Colour Minimums Really Cost You

You can order six colours. You just cannot order six colours at the unit price of one — and the reason is not what most buyers assume. The pigment itself is rarely the expensive part. What costs money is the changeover: the concentrate that has to be bought in a minimum lot, the machine that has to be purged between shades, the stabilisation scrap, and the fact that your minimum order quantity almost certainly applies per colour rather than per order. Understanding that distinction is what turns a shade range from a budget problem into a planning problem.

Why colour is not a free option

Colour in plastic packaging is normally introduced as a masterbatch — a concentrated pigment carried in a resin, dosed into the machine at a set percentage. That sounds like a trivial addition, and on a single-colour run of decent length it nearly is. The cost appears when the run is short or when there are many shades.

Three things happen on every shade. First, the concentrate has to be purchased, and suppliers sell it in minimum lots rather than by the gram — commonly in the region of 10 kg and upward, though the number varies by supplier and pigment, so ask your factory for theirs. Second, the machine has to be purged of the previous colour and brought back to a stable, consistent shade, which consumes material and machine time. Third, the first pieces off the machine after a changeover are usually off-shade and become scrap. On a long run this is invisible in the unit price. On a 5,000-piece shade, it is a meaningful share of the cost.

Your MOQ applies per shade, not per order

This is the single most common misunderstanding in colour planning. A published minimum of 5,000 pieces means 5,000 of one specification — one mold, one colour, one decoration. Six shades of the same bottle is not one 5,000-piece order; it is six orders, each of which has to clear its own setup and its own material minimum.

That is why the per-unit price quoted for a single colour cannot simply be divided across a range. Buyers who plan for it early are fine. Buyers who discover it after the shade range is already designed and approved are the ones who end up cutting colours at the last minute.

What colour actually costs you, in plain terms

Break the extra cost into four buckets and the conversation with your supplier gets much easier.

Concentrate minimum. You buy a minimum lot of pigment per shade. If your run only consumes a fraction of it, the remainder is either stored for your next order or written into the price.

Changeover time. Machine hours spent purging and stabilising are machine hours not producing sellable bottles.

Stabilisation scrap. The transition material between shades. This is normal and unavoidable, and it is priced in.

Approval rounds. Every shade that needs a physical sample chip costs a sampling cycle. Six shades sampled twice is twelve cycles.

Three ways to get six colours without paying for six setups

There is almost always a cheaper route to the same shelf effect, and it is worth exploring before you commit.

Use one base colour and differentiate with decoration. A single natural or white bottle, silk-screened or labelled differently per variant, frequently reads as a full shade range on shelf at a fraction of the tooling and changeover cost. For a launch range this is often the smartest move available.

Use transparent or frosted bottles and let the product colour show. If the formula itself is coloured, a clear PET bottle gives you visual differentiation for free, and the variant costs you nothing in changeover.

Group your shades into production waves. If you must have six true resin colours, running them in fewer, larger batches — three shades this quarter, three next — spreads each setup across more pieces. It requires committing to more inventory per shade, but the unit cost drops substantially.

Transparent, opaque and pearl are not equally easy

Difficulty varies by effect, and it is worth knowing before you fall in love with a swatch.

Transparent tints are relatively forgiving and are the standard choice for PET cosmetic bottles. Opaque shades are more demanding, because any streak or uneven dispersion is visible across a large flat surface. Pearl, metallic and high-gloss finishes are the most demanding of all — flow lines and weld marks show far more readily, and yield is typically lower, which shows up in price. Fluorescent and certain deep tones may also require higher dosing rates, which affects both cost and, in some applications, regulatory review for the contact material.

If budget is tight and you want six variants, put the difficult finishes on the smallest number of shades possible and let the rest be tints.

How a Pantone reference actually gets approved

Providing a Pantone code is a good start, but it is not a colour match. A Pantone reference is defined for ink on paper; the same code rendered in HDPE, in PET, at a different wall thickness, will not look identical. This is why physical approval exists.

The realistic sequence is: you give the reference, the factory produces sample chips or sample bottles, and you approve the physical piece under the lighting conditions your customer will actually see it in. Approve on the part, not on the code. And approve with a signed-off retained sample on both sides, because “slightly different from last time” is very hard to argue without a reference piece in hand.

One more practical point: lighting changes everything. A shade approved under warm warehouse light can look different in a retail environment. Approve under the light that matters.

What to ask before you commit to a shade range

Six questions, asked early, prevent most colour disputes.

What is the minimum order quantity per colour — not per order? What is the concentrate minimum lot, and is leftover pigment stored for my next run? Is there an additional changeover charge per shade? How many sample rounds are included before tooling or sampling is charged? Which of my shades are the difficult finishes? And what is the retained-sample process for reorders?

A supplier who answers all six specifically has done this before. Vague answers to the per-colour minimum question usually mean the buyer will find out later.

How we plan a multi-shade range

We start by asking what the shade range is for. If the answer is shelf differentiation on a first launch, we will usually suggest decorated clear or white bottles first, because it gets the same visual result at a materially lower entry cost and a shorter lead time. If the brand genuinely needs six resin colours, we plan them as six specifications — each with its own minimum, its own concentrate, its own sample approval and its own retained reference.

Questions buyers ask us most

Can I split one MOQ across several colours?

Usually not. The minimum applies per specification, because each shade carries its own setup, concentrate and changeover. Ask your supplier directly — some will accommodate a split on a first order at a higher unit price.

Why is a custom colour more expensive than the pigment cost suggests?

Because the dominant costs are changeover time, stabilisation scrap and the concentrate minimum lot, not the pigment itself. On short runs these easily exceed the material cost of the colourant.

Will my colour match exactly on reorder?

It should match the retained approved sample, which is why keeping one on both sides matters. Resin lots and process conditions move slightly, so a signed reference piece is what makes a reorder verifiable.

Is a Pantone code enough to specify colour?

No. It is a starting reference. Approval should always be on a physical sample of the actual bottle in the actual material, viewed in the lighting your customer will use.

What is the cheapest way to get six variants?
