Why airless beats a standard dip-tube pump

A conventional lotion pump pulls product up a dip tube, which leaves the last 10–15% stuck at the bottom and lets air back into the bottle after every stroke. An airless system uses a piston or collapsible bag instead, so the formula never touches the air and nearly 100% dispenses. That matters most for actives that oxidise — vitamin C, retinol and peptides degrade fast once oxygen gets in.

Two common designs exist. A piston airless uses a rising plate that pushes the cream up; a bag-in-bottle squeezes a soft inner pouch. Both protect the formula, but piston types are easier to fill and recycle.

When airless is (and isn’t) worth the extra cost

Airless packaging costs more than a standard pump, so it earns its keep only when the formula is sensitive or the price point is premium. A 30–50 ml serum or eye cream justifies it; a body wash in a 500 ml bottle usually does not.
