Short answer: yes, a factory can give you a number from a photo — and that number is usually wrong by enough to matter later. A photo carries shape. It does not carry weight, material, neck finish, wall thickness or quantity, and those five things are what the price is actually made of. Here is why a photo-only quote drifts, the six details that turn it into a firm number, and how to get a usable price in a single round instead of four.
Why a photo is not a specification
A photograph is a two-dimensional record of a shape. Everything that determines the cost of a plastic bottle lives in the third dimension or in the material, and none of it is visible. Two bottles can look identical on a phone screen and differ by 40% in unit price, because one weighs 22 g and the other weighs 34 g, or because one is PET and the other is HDPE, or because one takes a 24/410 closure and the other a 28/410.
This is not factories being difficult. When a photo arrives with “please quote”, the honest options are to guess, to ask, or to give a range and label it as a range. Guessing produces the quote that wins the email exchange and loses the order later, when the real specification turns up and the price has to move anyway.
Five things a photo cannot tell you
These are the same five fields on every serious quotation sheet.
Material. PET is clear and rigid, HDPE is opaque and slightly waxy, LDPE is soft and squeezable, PETG is clear but processed differently again. You cannot reliably separate them from a photograph, and material drives both resin cost and the process used.
Gram weight. Resin is bought by weight, so gram weight is the single biggest lever on unit price. A photo gives no clue whether the bottle in your hand is 18 g or 32 g — and that difference alone can move the price more than any negotiation will.
Neck finish. The thread standard decides which caps, pumps and sprayers fit. Two bottles with the same body can take entirely different closures, and a mismatch here is one of the costliest mistakes in packaging, because the bottles are perfectly good and still unusable.
Wall distribution. A thick base with a thin shoulder behaves very differently on a filling line, on a pallet and in a drop test. Photographs hide this completely.
Quantity and decoration. Whether you need 5,000 pieces or 500,000 changes the process, the tooling choice and the per-unit cost. Whether you need one-colour silk screening, hot stamping or a full-wrap label changes it again.
The numbers that actually decide the price
Strip a quotation down and it is roughly: resin cost (material × gram weight), conversion cost (cycle time and cavities against machine hours), decoration, closures and packing, plus setup costs spread across your order quantity. Notice how little of that list a photograph can inform.
This is also why two suppliers can quote the same-looking bottle 20% apart without either being dishonest. If one assumed 24 g and the other assumed 30 g, they priced two different objects that happen to photograph the same way.
How to get a firm quote in one round
You do not need a technical drawing. You need the photo plus three measurements, and you can take all three in about five minutes with things you already own.
Weigh it. A kitchen scale reading to one decimal place is enough. If you have the closure, weigh it separately. This one number does more for quote accuracy than anything else you can send.
Measure height and widest diameter. A tape measure will do; calipers are better. Take height base-to-shoulder and the widest point of the body.
Identify the neck. The neck finish is very often molded as a small code on the base or shoulder of the bottle. If you cannot read it, measure the outer diameter of the thread in millimetres — around 24 mm and 28 mm cover the two most common families.
Say what goes in it, and how many you want. “Alcohol-based toner, 20,000 pieces to start” tells a factory more about material compatibility and process than most drawing details would.
Send those together with the photo and you will normally get a firm price on the first exchange, rather than a range that has to be re-quoted twice.
Why a good factory replies with questions
A supplier who answers your photo with five questions is not stalling; they are avoiding quoting you for the wrong bottle. The suppliers who come back fastest with a single confident number are often the ones who quietly filled in the blanks themselves — and you will not find out which blanks until the samples land.
There is one happy exception worth knowing. If your bottle is a common shape, a photo may be all that is needed to identify existing tooling. With more than 2,000 molds already built in our own tool room, a surprising share of photo enquiries turn out to match something we already run. That flips the answer from “we will need to cut a new mold, eight to ten weeks” to “we can sample this next week” — which is why sending the photo is still worth doing, even though it is not enough on its own.
When a photo quote is genuinely fine
Ballpark pricing has a real job. If you are testing whether a project is commercially viable, or getting internal budget approval before spending engineering time, a range is all you need. Just ask for it as a range, and ask what assumptions sit behind it.
“Around $0.30–0.40, assuming 25 g PET and 20,000 pieces” is a genuinely useful answer. “$0.34” with no assumptions behind it is a trap, because the number looks firm and is not.
What happens when you skip the details
Three failure modes repeat. The first is the price that moves after samples, because the assumed gram weight was wrong. The second is the closure that does not fit, discovered after the bottles are already made — the most expensive version, since the bottles are fine and still scrap. The third is the formula reacting with the material, where the photo gave no hint that the contents needed a different resin or a barrier approach.
All three are cheap to prevent and expensive to fix, and all three share one root cause: a decision taken on incomplete information that each side quietly filled in differently.
How we handle a photo enquiry
Two steps. First we check the photo against existing tooling, because that is where the biggest saving hides — no mold cost, no mold lead time, and a sample from a tool that has already run production. Second, if the shape is new, we ask for the three measurements above before pricing anything.
We have been doing this since 2003, across cosmetics, personal care, household, disinfectant and pharmaceutical packaging, and the pattern is consistent: enquiries that arrive with gram weight and quantity get a firm quote the same day, while enquiries that arrive with a photo alone get a short conversation first. Both end up in the same place. One of them gets there in one round instead of four.

Can you give me a price from a photo alone?
We can give you a range, and we will tell you what it assumes. For a firm price we need gram weight, height and diameter, neck finish, material if you know it, order quantity and decoration. In practice a photo plus a kitchen-scale weight gets us most of the way.
What if I have no sample — only a competitor’s product listing?
Send the listing and any dimension the seller publishes. We can often identify the shape family and propose the closest existing mold, which is usually faster and far cheaper than starting from a drawing of a bottle that was never designed for your filling line.
Do I need a technical drawing?
Not to get started. A drawing becomes necessary once you move to a new mold, because tolerances, thread specification and decoration zones have to be defined. Before that stage, measurements off a physical sample are more accurate than most drawings anyway, since they come from the real part.
How accurate is a ballpark quote?
Treat it as a budget window, not a price. If the assumptions are stated, a ballpark is usually good enough to decide whether to proceed. If the assumptions are not stated, ask for them before you show the number to anyone else.
Why did my quote change after I sent a sample?
Almost always because gram weight or material differed from what was assumed. Weight is the dominant cost driver in a blow-molded or injection-molded bottle, so a few grams of difference moves the unit price more than any other single factor.
