Custom Cosmetic Packaging: From Sketch to Production

Going fully custom means owning the mold — a bottle shaped exactly for your formula and brand. It is the highest-commitment path, but it is also the only way to get a silhouette no competitor stocks. The production sequence and what each stage costs you in time and money.

Sketch and DFM review

Start from a 2D sketch or reference image. A factory runs a Design-for-Manufacture check: wall thickness, demold angle and neck compatibility. This step catches shapes that look great on paper but cannot be blown or injected cleanly.

Mold making and first article

Cutting steel takes 15–30 days and typically costs a few thousand dollars depending on cavity count. You then receive a first-article sample to approve dimensions, weight and finish before any bulk runs.

Decoration and MOQ

Once the mold is approved, color masterbatch, silk-screen, hot-stamp or spray coating are set up per run. Custom MOQ usually starts near 10,000 pcs; the mold is kept on file for consistent re-orders.

Lead time to bulk

Plan on 30–50 days from approved sketch to bulk shipment when mold making is included. Stocking the mold for re-orders later drops repeats to the standard 20–30 day window.

Protect the tooling

Confirm who owns the mold (you should), that it is stored and photographed, and that cavity specs are documented so a future reorder is identical even if your contact changes.
