Empty Cosmetic Bottles: Sizes, Materials and Neck Finishes to Know

Shopping for empty cosmetic bottles feels simple until a pump will not fit or a serum clouds in the wrong resin. The three specs that decide success are material, capacity and neck finish. Get them right and everything downstream just works.

Materials at a glance

PET — clear, rigid, for leave-on serums and toners. HDPE/PE — opaque, chemical-resistant, for shampoos and creams. PETG — clear with better chemical tolerance. PP — heat-resistant, used for closures and hot-fill.

Capacity by use

30–50 ml suits serums, oils and travel; 100 ml is the TSA carry-on ceiling; 200–500 ml covers lotions and shampoos; 500–1000 ml serves family and refill sizes. Pick the size to the ritual, not the catalog.

Neck finishes explained

The first number is neck diameter (18/20/24/28 mm); the second is thread style (410, 415). A 28/410 bottle takes any standard 28/410 closure — pump, spray or cap. Mismatched threads are the most common empty-bottle mistake.

Closure matching

Buy the closure to the exact neck. If you already own pumps, match the bottle to them; if buying both, specify neck finish once and source both from the same standard.

Color and finish options

Clear, amber, frosted, soft-touch and pearlescent are standard. Amber and frosted protect light-sensitive actives; clear reads premium for stable formulas.
