The supplement and OTC bottle looks simple, but the wrong resin or closure shortens shelf life or fails compliance. This guide covers the choices that protect tablets and satisfy regulators.
Bottles from our catalogue — wide-mouth bottles for tablets and capsules.

HDPE first for moisture
Tablets and capsules hate humidity. HDPE’s lower moisture transmission makes it the default; pair it with a desiccant canister or packet and a tight CRC screw cap.
PET is an option where you want a clear bottle, accepting slightly higher moisture transmission.
Desiccant compatibility
Leave headspace for a desiccant and specify a cap that seals well. We can advise wall thickness and closure torque for stable RH inside the bottle.
Child-resistant closure
Most markets require CRC for OTC and supplement bottles. Our Child-resistant & tamper-evident closures: compliance basics guide covers the compliance basics; tamper-evident seals are expected at retail.
Sizes
Common pill bottles are 40–250 ml; we also tool 30 ml and 500 ml. All products shows the range.
Compliance note: Chemical, medical and industrial fills need proven packaging. Shijin is ISO 9001:2015 certified and bottles are tested to ISTA transit standards for leak, drop and stack performance, with material and certification documents supplied on request.
Moisture is the enemy of every tablet
Tablets and capsules fail when they absorb humidity — they soften, discolour or lose potency. HDPE is the default bottle material because its lower moisture-vapour transmission keeps the interior drier than PET, and it pairs with a desiccant canister or packet to hold a stable relative humidity inside the closed bottle.
PET is a legitimate choice when you want a clear bottle, but it accepts slightly higher moisture transmission, so a desiccant becomes even more important. Leave headspace for the desiccant and specify a cap with a good seal and consistent closure torque.
CRC, tamper-evidence and the sizes that sell
Most markets require a child-resistant closure for OTC and supplement bottles, and a tamper-evident seal is expected at retail so the customer can see the bottle is unopened. The CRC cap and the tamper ring are separate features — specify both explicitly rather than assuming one implies the other.
Common pill-bottle sizes run 40–250 ml; we also tool 30 ml and 500 ml for larger count or bulk formats. Matching the bottle to the tablet count, the desiccant size and the closure keeps the pack compact without cramming.

What cosmetic formulas demand from the bottle
For cosmetic fills the bottle is part of the compliance and performance chain, not just a container. The body has to hold the formula without stress cracking or leaching, survive the filling line, and stay readable after months on a shelf or in a warehouse.
Across our 30+ blow-molding lines we see the same non-negotiables: a neck that seats the closure squarely, wall thickness tuned to the fill weight, and colour and decoration that survive transport and UV. A bottle that passes the bench test but fails the warehouse is not a pass.
If the formula is viscous, acidic or solvent-based, tell us at the enquiry stage. The resin choice and the lining of the closure both shift, and selecting them early is far cheaper than re-tooling after a failed stability test.
Capacities we stock for cosmetic
| Model | Material | Capacity | Neck |
|---|---|---|---|
| SJT0194 | PET | 194 ml | 28 mm |
| Custom 350ml HDPE Cosmetic Bottle | HDPE | 350 ml | 28/410 |
| 700ml PE Round Bottle for Shampoo | PE | 700 ml | 28 mm |
| 100ml PET Transparent Bottle 24mm | PET | 100 ml | 24 mm |
These are stock shapes from our catalogue — the same tools a buyer samples first before committing to a custom mold. Capacities run from small trial sizes to bulk drums, so most cosmetic programmes can start from an existing mold and skip tooling lead time.
Sampling from a stock mold also de-risks the launch: you get a real, fill-tested bottle in days, validate it on your line, then scale or customise once the volume is proven.
Compliance and documentation
Every food-contact and pharma-adjacent bottle we make is produced under ISO 9001 controls, with FDA, SGS and EU 10/2011 food-contact documentation available on request. For export we supply the material certificate and, where required, UN-marked HDPE options for chemical transport.
If your market needs a specific claim (BPA-free, documented recycled content, tamper-evident), tell us at the sampling stage so we select the right resin and closure before the first run.
Sampling and first-run support
Because the tool is cut in-house, sampling lead time is typically 3–10 days from drawing to first article. We hold the first-article sample against the drawing, confirm wall and weight, and only then move to bulk.
For a new programme that means you can prove the bottle on your filling line before committing to a large order — and repeats stay consistent because the same mold and resin are used on every run.
Frequently Asked Questions
HDPE or PET for supplement bottles?
HDPE for best moisture protection; PET if you need a clear bottle and can accept higher moisture transmission.
Can I add a desiccant to the bottle?
Yes — leave headspace and we spec the closure torque and wall thickness for stable internal RH.
Are child-resistant caps standard?
CRC caps with tamper seals are available and commonly required for OTC/supplement bottles.
What sizes do you tool for tablets?
Typically 40–250 ml, with 30 ml and 500 ml also available.
Why do pill bottles use HDPE instead of PET?
HDPE has lower moisture transmission, which keeps tablets and capsules drier on the shelf. PET is used when a clear bottle is wanted, accepting slightly higher moisture ingress.
Does a child-resistant cap also mean tamper-evident?
Not necessarily — CRC and tamper-evidence are separate features. Specify both when your market requires a tamper-evident seal on top of the child-resistant closure.
