Alcohol content changes the material question

A sanitizer is not a lotion with a different label — the alcohol level is what makes the packaging decision interesting. Typical gels run 60–75% ethanol or isopropanol, and at those concentrations the two things that decide whether a bottle survives are the resin and the closure seal. PET handles normal retail cycles well and gives you the clarity that reads as clean on shelf; HDPE is the safer call for long-term storage or higher concentrations.

The failure mode is not dramatic. It is a slow loss of fill weight through the wall, a cap that loosens in a hot warehouse, or a panel that deforms once the alcohol has been sitting against it for months. All three are preventable at specification stage and all three are expensive once retail distribution has started.

That is why we push a compatibility soak test before tooling: the bottle, the closure and your actual formula stored together at temperature. It is a few weeks, and it is the difference between a packaging decision and a guess.

Sizes, closures and dispensing formats

Sanitizer programmes usually need a family rather than a single bottle: a 30–60 ml personal size, a 100–250 ml desk or bag size, and a 500 ml counter-top or pump format. Running all of them in one material and one decoration language is what makes the range look deliberate instead of assembled from whatever was available.

Closure choice follows how people use it. A flip-top or disc cap suits a bag-size gel, a lotion pump suits a counter-top bottle, and a mist sprayer suits the liquid alcohol sprays. The seal matters more than the style — specify the liner, and test the assembled bottle upside down at temperature, because that is how a leak actually shows up.

Print on a sanitizer bottle takes more abuse than most: it gets handled constantly, wiped with alcohol, and stuffed into bags. We surface-treat before silk screening so the ink bonds properly, and we would rather discuss a simpler one-colour print that survives than a complex one that does not.

Volume, lead time and getting a programme moving

Sanitizer demand is famously spiky, so the honest answer on lead time depends on whether you are running a stock mould or a custom one. On a stock tool, samples are typically 3–10 days away; on a custom shape, add tooling time. Production runs across 30+ lines with capacity of up to 200,000 pcs per day, so once a bottle is approved the constraint is scheduling, not moulding.

Minimums are 5,000 pcs for white, black and natural closures and accessories and 10,000 pcs for custom colours. If you are launching into an uncertain demand curve, say so — it changes which route we recommend, and a stock bottle with your label often beats a custom tool for the first order.

Documentation matters in this category because sanitizer often crosses regulated borders. ISO 9001, FDA food-contact compliance for the resin, SGS reports and EU 10/2011 documentation are available; request them with the quote so they are prepared alongside production rather than after it.

The only way to be certain is a compatibility soak test with your actual formula at your actual storage temperature — it is a few weeks of testing that prevents a recall, which is why we recommend it before tooling rather than after.

What closure should I use for a sanitizer gel versus a spray?+

A gel wants a positive, re-sealable closure — a flip-top or disc-top cap for personal sizes, a lotion pump for counter-top formats. A liquid alcohol spray needs a mist sprayer sized to the viscosity, and that is worth sampling with your actual liquid because spray performance depends on the formula, not just the pump. In both cases the seal is what prevents leaks in a hot warehouse, so specify the liner and test the assembled bottle inverted at temperature.

Can I get a custom shape for a sanitizer launch?+

Yes, but it is worth separating the two questions: do you need a custom shape, or do you need to be on shelf quickly? A private mould gives you a shape nobody else has and adds tooling time measured in weeks. A stock bottle from our 2,000+ mould library, in your colour with your label, can be sampled in 3–10 days and gets you selling while a custom programme runs in parallel. Most launches are better served by the second route for the first order.
