Genuinely good at: serving EU buyers who need short transit, smaller minimum runs, and easier site visits. Time-zone and travel friction are minimal.
Watch for: unit prices are generally above Asian levels, and the range of available stock tooling may be narrower than Guangdong’s. You are largely buying speed and accessibility, not the lowest unit cost.
Best fit: EU-based brands, mid volumes, programmes where a factory visit matters and freight risk needs to be low.
Mexico and nearshoring: when proximity beats unit price
For North American brands, nearshoring compresses the supply chain from weeks to days and removes a large share of the freight and duty exposure.
Genuinely good at: fast replenishment, responsive small runs, and programmes where inventory carrying cost exceeds the unit price saving. Also attractive where a brand’s customers scrutinise transport emissions.
Watch for: tooling depth is thinner for complex cosmetic formats, and the supplier base for decorative finishes is narrower. A shape that is routine in Guangdong may have no stock equivalent nearby.

Will moving out of China reduce my lead time?
Only if your bottleneck is transit. If your bottleneck is tooling, sampling or approval cycles — which it usually is — changing country will not help, and may make it worse if the new supplier has thinner in-house tooling.
