Almost every bottle failure traces to one of four causes: a dimensional mismatch between bottle and closure, a material incompatible with the formulation, a molding or sealing defect, or damage in filling and transport. Which one it is decides who pays — and it is usually discoverable in an afternoon.

A quoted lead time is the production window, not the calendar to your warehouse. Sampling, tooling, trials, decoration, inspection, haulage, export and import clearance each add their own queue — commonly four to eight weeks buyers did not budget for. Map the whole chain and attack the longest queue.

Unit price is typically only 55–70% of what a cosmetic bottle costs by the time it reaches your filling line. Tooling amortisation, closures, decoration, freight, duties, warehousing and rework make up the rest. How to build the one-page landed-cost model and run it on every quote.

Two factories quoting the “same” bottle are rarely quoting the same thing. The gap hides in gram weight, resin grade, masterbatch ratio, cavity count, decoration, closure bundling and scrap allowance — a 15–40% spread is normal, and the cheapest number is often not the cheapest bottle. Force every supplier onto one written spec.

An airless bottle is not a sealed vacuum – it is a mechanical dispenser with a rising piston or collapsing pouch. Nearly every leak traces to one of six causes: trapped air above the piston, incompatible seal material, low piston interference, valve suck-back, viscosity outside the pump window, or air-freight pressure differential.

Hot fill at 82-93 C lets you run a preservative-light formula, but forces heat-set PET or PP and creates an internal vacuum that collapses side walls without vacuum compensation panels. Four documents decide whether a recycled-content or food-contact claim holds up: a Declaration of Compliance, a migration test report dated within 12 months, a per-lot Certificate of Analysis, and a GRS Transaction Certificate naming your product. The usual gap is a supplier-level certificate where you needed a lot-level one.

“Virgin” and “recycled” are sourcing categories, not quality grades. Prime virgin resin carries one documented heat history and a full COA; recycled splits into PCR, PIR and in-house regrind.
