Color Matching: Pantone, Master Samples and Batch Consistency
Why a Pantone number is a starting point rather than a result, and why the approved physical sample — not the screen, and not the paper swatch — is what production is matched against.
Colour is approved on a physical sample, and Pantone is where the conversation starts
A Pantone reference is a standardised colour on a paper substrate. A bottle is a plastic substrate, with its own translucency, surface finish and thickness. The same reference produces different visual results on the two, and this is not a defect in either: Pantone paper references and plastic colour references may not produce identical visual results.
So the workflow is not "match the Pantone number". It is: agree the reference, produce a physical sample in the real material and finish, agree the tolerance on that sample, and then approve it as the master sample. Production is matched against the master sample, and the master sample is retained by both sides.
Pantone C and U, and why the suffix matters
The letter after a Pantone number describes the paper stock the swatch is printed on, not the colour itself. Two swatches with the same number but different suffixes are not the same visual target.
Reading a Pantone reference
Plastic colour references are not paper references
Four things change when a colour moves from paper to a plastic bottle, and each one shifts the colour the eye actually sees.

This is the practical reason a plastic colour reference exists as a separate object from a paper swatch. A colour chip moulded in the real resin, in the real finish, at the real wall thickness is the only reference that answers the question the eye is asking.
Masterbatch ratios are standardised by finish — transparent, pearl, high-gloss and frosted each have their own established band — which is what makes batch-to-batch consistency possible at all.
Physical sample matching: how the colour is actually established
Matching starts from a physical reference wherever one exists. An existing bottle, a competitor pack, a printed carton or a fabric swatch carries more information than a code, because it also carries the finish, the light and the translucency the target was chosen in.
Agree the reference
A Pantone code with its suffix, a physical sample, or both. Where both exist, the physical sample leads and the code is recorded alongside it.
Produce the sample in the real material
The match is made in the actual resin, with the actual finish and the actual wall thickness — not on a paper proof and not on a screen.
Measure as well as look
The sample is compared to the reference both visually, under controlled lighting, and instrumentally, so the result is a measurement rather than a preference.
Agree the tolerance
The acceptance tolerance is agreed with you and recorded against the master sample. We do not apply a tolerance you have not seen.
Approve the master sample
The approved physical sample becomes the master sample. Both sides keep a signed copy, and it is the reference production is matched against.
Colour difference is normally expressed as ΔE, measured instrumentally. The tolerance that matters is the one written into your specification against your master sample — so we agree it with you rather than quoting a single number for every project.
What we will not do is describe a colour as an exact Pantone match. A plastic part is matched to an approved physical sample within an agreed tolerance. That is a stronger commitment than a claim.
Master sample approval
The master sample is the single most useful object in a colour project, because it converts a subjective question into a comparison. It is a physical part, in the production material and finish, signed off by both sides, and retained by both sides.
What the master sample settles
Programmes that go wrong are usually programmes where the colour was approved verbally, on a screen, or on a paper proof. Those are not approvals; they are expectations.
Batch-to-batch colour consistency
Colour consistency is a manufacturing control, not a promise. Four variables move between lots, and all four are managed.
- ▸Masterbatch let-down ratio. The pigment concentration is dosed against the resin at a controlled ratio. Drift in the ratio is the commonest cause of a visible batch-to-batch difference.
- ▸Resin lot variation. Base resin colour and clarity shift slightly between supplier lots, and those shifts move the final colour even at a constant pigment ratio.
- ▸Finish and wall thickness. A matte body and a gloss body do not read the same at the same pigment load, and colour density rises with wall thickness.
- ▸Process temperature. Pigments and coatings respond to heat, so the drying and processing window has to be held stable across a run.
- ▸Inspection against the approved chip. Colour is compared to the approved standard chip under standard light, in process and again at outgoing inspection, so drift is caught inside the run rather than at the customer.

Can you match my brand’s Pantone colour exactly?+
We match to a Pantone reference by producing a physical sample in the real material, finish and wall thickness, and then agreeing a colour tolerance with you against that sample. We do not describe the result as an exact Pantone match, because a moulded plastic part is a different substrate from a printed paper swatch and the two do not produce identical visual results.
What is the difference between Pantone C and U?+
The letter describes the paper stock the swatch is printed on, not the colour. C is coated paper, where the ink sits on the surface and reads denser and more saturated. U is uncoated paper, where the ink is partly absorbed and the same number reads lighter and flatter. Neither describes a plastic surface.
Why is my bottle not the same colour as the Pantone book?+
Because paper is opaque and plastic is translucent, and because surface finish and wall thickness both change how much light comes back out of the wall. Gloss deepens saturation, matte flattens it, and a thicker wall reads stronger at the same pigment load. That is why approval happens on a physical sample in the real material rather than on the code.
What is a master sample and why do I need one?+
A master sample is a physical part in the production material and finish, approved and signed by both sides and retained by both. It converts the colour question from a subjective judgement into a comparison, and it is what every production lot is checked against. Programmes that approve colour verbally or on a screen are the ones that argue later.
How do you keep colour consistent between batches?+
By controlling the masterbatch let-down ratio and the process window, by standardising masterbatch ratios by finish, and by comparing every lot against the approved standard chip under standard light in process and again at outgoing inspection. Longer programmes are planned around masterbatch lots where the colour has to hold across several shipments.
Can you match a colour if I only have a physical sample and no Pantone code?+
Yes, and it is often the better starting point. A physical sample carries the finish, translucency and lighting the original colour was chosen in, which a code alone does not. Send the sample with the market and the material you intend to use, and we will match it in the real resin.
Does a custom colour have a minimum order?+
A custom colour has a minimum because a masterbatch has to be made for it, and the cheapest route is to amortise it over a run. Tell us the colour and the volume and we will confirm the minimum for your case — a colour already in the standard range does not carry the same constraint.
Does recycled content change the colour?+
Yes. Recycled PET carries a grey or green cast and higher haze, which shifts every colour moulded or printed against it. Recycled HDPE is slightly warmer grey than virgin, but because the pack was already opaque there is no optical cost. Set the recycled-content level first, then match the colour on the recycled material.
