Bottle Decoration: Silk Screen, Labelling, Hot Stamping and Spray Finishing

Quick answer

Decoration is a surface problem before it is an artwork problem

Ink and adhesive do not bond to plastic; they bond to a prepared plastic surface. That is why the first question about any decoration job is not "which process" but what the substrate is. PET and PETG are treated to raise surface energy; PP is non-polar and needs flame or corona treatment to at least 38 dynes/cm before ink or adhesive will hold. Get that wrong and the artwork fails an adhesion test rather than a design review.

Silk screen (up to six colours), hot stamping, pressure-sensitive labelling, spray coating with matte, gloss, frosted, holographic and soft-touch finishes, pad printing and shrink-sleeve labelling all run in-house.

We do not publish a decoration minimum order quantity for each process, because it depends on the number of colours, the number of processes on one pack and the artwork. It is quoted per project — not assumed from a table.

Process by process

The nine decoration routes in detail

Each block answers the same six questions, so two options can be compared on the same terms.

01 · Silk screen

What it is
A screen is prepared for each colour, ink is pushed through it onto the bottle, and each colour is printed and dried in sequence. It is the workhorse process for one- and two-colour branding on a curved body.
Visual effect
Flat, opaque, saturated colour with a clean edge. Up to six colours on one body.
Typical application
Brand marks, product names, volume and ingredient panels, and regulatory text on the body of a bottle.
Material considerations
Surface energy has to reach at least 38 dynes/cm. PP is non-polar and needs flame or corona treatment; PET and PETG are treated to raise energy before printing. Curvature limits how much of the artwork can be printed accurately, and printing on the bottle base is subject to curvature constraints.
Production and minimums
Screen setup is charged per colour per design. Minimums depend on the colour count and the design, and are quoted per project rather than published as a single number.
Quality considerations
Adhesion is checked with the ASTM D3359 cross-hatch test targeting 4B–5B, alongside print position and colour density checks.

02 · Labelling

What it is
A printed label is applied to the body, either as a pressure-sensitive roll label or as a shrink sleeve that wraps the full circumference.
Visual effect
Full-colour print quality that screen printing cannot match, with the option of a full-body graphic via shrink sleeve.
Typical application
Multi-colour artwork, ingredient panels with heavy copy, promotional variants and short-run designs where a screen setup is not justified.
Material considerations
The adhesive system has to suit the substrate and the coating. A frosted or soft-touch body changes how the label reads and how well it holds.
Production and minimums
Plate and print setup are per design, and a shrink sleeve needs its own artwork distortion worked out for the bottle shape. Quoted per project.
Quality considerations
Print position, adhesion and abrasion resistance are inspected, because a label that lifts in a humid warehouse is a retail complaint rather than a factory one.

03 · Hot stamping

What it is
A heated die presses metallic foil onto the surface, transferring the foil only where the die makes contact.
Visual effect
Metallic gold or silver with sharp edge definition and a premium reflective finish that no ink reproduces.
Typical application
Logos, thin rules and small areas of brand accent on premium skincare and gift formats.
Material considerations
Suits smooth, well-treated surfaces. Deep undercuts and heavy texture reduce definition, and the substrate has to accept the foil release cleanly.
Production and minimums
Foil and die setup are charged per design and per foil colour. Quoted per project.
Quality considerations
Edge definition and adhesion are checked, including resistance to abrasion in transit, because foil that rubs off in a carton reads as a manufacturing defect.

04 · Spray coating

What it is
A coating is sprayed over the whole body, giving an overall colour or effect rather than a printed image.
Visual effect
Depends on the coating system — matte, gloss, holographic, frosted or soft-touch, all of which are finishes within the spray-coating family.
Typical application
Formats where the entire body carries the brand colour, and where a coloured body is wanted without colouring the resin itself.
Material considerations
Requires a clean, properly treated surface, and adds a process step after moulding, so it interacts with the decoration sequence rather than replacing it.
Production and minimums
Quoted per project. Where a pack carries more than one decoration process the sequence matters, because a coating applied before printing changes the surface the ink sees.
Quality considerations
Coating uniformity, colour and adhesion are inspected, with particular attention to the shoulder and base where coverage is hardest to hold.

05 · Matte finish

What it is
A spray-coating finish that scatters light instead of reflecting it.
Visual effect
Soft, non-reflective surface with a drier, more premium hand feel than gloss.
Typical application
Minimalist skincare and personal-care ranges, and men’s grooming formats where a low-sheen surface signals the positioning.
Material considerations
Reads differently on clear and opaque bodies: on a clear body it also obscures the fill, which is either the point or the problem.
Production and minimums
Applied as a spray-coating finish, quoted per project.
Quality considerations
Uniformity of sheen across the batch and adhesion of the coating are the two checks that matter, because matte shows inconsistency more readily than gloss.

06 · Gloss finish

What it is
A spray-coating finish that produces a high-reflectance surface.
Visual effect
Sharp highlights and a wet-look depth to the colour.
Typical application
Colour-led ranges where the body finish is itself the design idea.
Material considerations
Gloss amplifies every surface defect, so the moulding quality has to be right before the finish is applied. Scuffs and flow marks that are invisible on a matte body become obvious on a gloss one.

Quality considerations
Gloss level and surface defect inspection, with the finish inspected under the same lighting the customer will use.

07 · Holographic finish

What it is
A spray-coating finish producing an iridescent, angle-dependent surface.
Visual effect
Colour that shifts with the viewing angle, which photographs well and reads as a limited-edition cue.
Typical application
Seasonal and promotional formats, and ranges where shelf disruption is the objective.
Material considerations
Works best on smooth bodies without deep undercuts, because the effect depends on an even coating over an even surface.
Production and minimums
Applied as a spray-coating finish, quoted per project.
Quality considerations
Consistency of the effect across the batch, since angle-dependent finishes reveal variation between units more than flat finishes do.

08 · Frosted finish

What it is
A spray-coating finish producing a soft, translucent haze over the body.
Visual effect
A frosted-glass impression without the weight, with the fill visible but softened. Frosting can also be produced by mould texture rather than coating, which is a different route to a similar result.
Typical application
Skincare and treatment formats where a soft, premium look is wanted and full transparency is not.
Material considerations
Works with clear and tinted bodies. It deliberately reduces how clearly the fill reads, so it is a specification choice and not only a finish choice.
Production and minimums
Applied as a spray-coating finish, quoted per project.
Quality considerations
Haze uniformity and absence of streaks — frosting is judged on evenness, and uneven frosting is immediately visible against a contrasting fill.

09 · Soft-touch finish

What it is
A spray-coating finish engineered for a velvet, low-slip tactile surface.
Visual effect
A tactile finish that feels warm and grippy, and reads as premium in the hand rather than on the shelf.
Typical application
Premium personal care, gift formats and packaging the customer holds for a long time.
Material considerations
Requires a compatible coating system on the substrate. Because it is a coating rather than a moulded texture, its performance depends on adhesion to the treated surface.

Applied as a spray-coating finish, quoted per project.
Quality considerations
Tactile uniformity, adhesion and resistance to marking — soft-touch surfaces are more prone to showing fingerprints and scuffs than gloss or matte.

The adhesion test is not a formality. A decoration that survives the factory and lifts in a humid warehouse or under retail handling is a complaint raised against your brand, not against the printer.

How many colours the design uses — this drives both the setup charge and the minimum.

Or the effect you want, and we will propose the process. The effect table above maps effects to processes.
Print area
Where on the body the decoration sits, and whether the base or the shoulder is involved, since curvature limits both.
Substrate and finish
Material and whether the body carries a coating — a coating applied before printing changes the surface the ink sees.
Sequence
If the pack carries more than one process, for example a spray coating plus a screen print plus a label.
Regulatory content
Ingredient panels, batch coding and any market-specific text.
Quantities
First order and annual volume, since setup is amortised across the run.

Ink and compliance

Inks, migration and why the ink specification is part of the pack specification

Packaging is not an ingredient, but decoration sits between the consumer and the product, so the ink specification belongs in the pack specification rather than in the print shop.

  • Low-migration ink systems. Decoration uses low-migration UV-cured inks aligned with the Swiss Ordinance SR 817.023.21 and published packaging-ink guidance.
  • Surface energy before printing. Treatment to at least 38 dynes/cm on non-polar substrates, verified before the run rather than after.
  • Adhesion verified objectively. ASTM D3359 cross-hatch testing targeting 4B–5B, so adhesion is a number rather than an opinion.
  • Migration testing where the application needs it. We test to EU 10/2011 framing — overall migration of 10 mg/dm² plus specific migration limits and a NIAS risk assessment — and frame cosmetics against EC 1223/2009.

Documentation discipline: ISO 9001 is the certification we hold. Supplier audit reports, material COA, migration test reports and recycled-content documents are issued as documents on request — they are evidence, not certifications.

A migration test report is a report about a specific article and a specific test condition. It is evidence. It is not a certification, and we do not describe it as one.

Decoration: buyer questions

What decoration options do you offer?+

Silk screen (up to six colours), hot stamping, pressure-sensitive labelling, spray coating with matte, gloss, frosted, holographic and soft-touch finishes, pad printing and shrink-sleeve labelling all run in-house. Silk screen takes up to six colours. Effects such as matte, gloss, holographic, frosted and soft-touch are finishes within the spray-coating family rather than separate processes.

Which decoration process should I choose?+

Silk screen for flat opaque colour and one- or two-colour branding on a curved body; labelling for full-colour or heavy-copy artwork; hot stamping for metallic accents with sharp edge definition; spray coating when the whole body carries the colour or an effect. Where artwork is multi-colour and the volume is moderate, labelling usually wins on setup cost.

Why does my print peel off?+

Almost always surface energy. Ink and adhesive bond to a prepared surface, not to plastic. PP is non-polar and needs flame or corona treatment to at least 38 dynes/cm; PET and PETG are treated to raise energy before printing. We verify adhesion with the ASTM D3359 cross-hatch test targeting 4B–5B, and the fix belongs before the run rather than after it.

What are your decoration minimums?+

Quoted per project, because the minimum depends on the number of colours, how many processes sit on one pack, and the artwork. Complex multi-process decoration may carry a higher minimum. We do not publish a single number for decoration, and we will not quote one without seeing the design.

Does decoration cost more on a coloured bottle?+

A coloured body normally costs more than a clear one in the same material, because pigment is added through masterbatch, and a custom colour has its own minimum. It is a material and masterbatch cost rather than a printing cost, so a decorated clear bottle and a decorated coloured bottle are priced on different lines.

Can you print on the base of a bottle?+

For stock shapes, screen printing on the bottle base is possible subject to curvature constraints. Deeply dished or heavily radiused bases limit how much of the artwork can be printed accurately, so send the shape and we will confirm.

Are your inks suitable for cosmetic packaging?+

Decoration uses low-migration UV-cured inks aligned with the Swiss Ordinance SR 817.023.21 and published packaging-ink guidance. Where the application needs it we test to EU 10/2011 framing with overall migration limits, specific migration limits and a NIAS risk assessment, and frame cosmetics against EC 1223/2009. Ask for the migration report on the finished article rather than a resin data sheet.
