An exclusive jar design that did not exist in any mould library. The project was a tooling programme before it was a production one.

Challenge
Build a jar shape that existed in no mould library, in two sizes, on a schedule the brand could plan a launch around — and keep the design exclusive to them afterwards.

A private mould programme in PETG for both sizes, with the tool marked for the client so it cannot be confused with a stock cavity. Wall thickness and shoulder geometry were set at the design stage because on a thick-wall PETG jar the wall is what produces the premium appearance, and it cannot be adjusted after the tool is cut.

Sequence

How a private mould programme runs

This is the stage sequence for a new tool. It is longer than a stock-mould project, and each stage below is a point where the buyer has something to approve.

1. Drawing and design review
The jar was reviewed as a manufactured part before anything was cut: wall thickness, shoulder radius, parting line position and draft angle. On a thick-wall PETG jar these are what produce the appearance, and none of them can be changed once the tool exists.
2. Stock-mould search, recorded
The 2,000+ existing mould family was searched first and the result recorded. Even on a project that ends in a new tool, that search is what justifies the tooling charge — it is the evidence that no existing cavity would have done.
3. Tool making — 45 days
The tooling programme ran 45 days from drawing approval to first samples. That clock is set by the tool, not by the moulding line, which is why a launch date has to be planned against it from the start.
4. Sample round
First samples were issued for approval on shape, wall, colour and finish. Where the sample needs a change, the change is made to the tool, and the round repeats — which is why the design review at stage one matters more than speed at stage three.
5. Production run
Once the sample is approved, production runs against it. Wall thickness at four points per cavity and weight within ±2% are checked in process rather than at the end of the run.
6. Assembly and packing
The airless assembly and the jar closure were fitted and leak tested as a unit before the 8,000 pieces were packed and shipped.

What a private tool means for your design

A private mould is the part of a packaging project most often misunderstood, in both directions — buyers sometimes assume it buys more protection than it does, and sometimes assume it is not worth paying for at all.

Does a private tool remove the sampling stage?No, it adds one. A new tool always produces a first sample for approval before production; the decision is what you do with the sample, not whether you get one.
Is a private tool always the right answer?Rarely. Most projects are built on the closest existing mould plus custom colour, closure and decoration. A private tool buys a specific shape and exclusivity — if you need neither, search the library first.

  • We do not publish the client’s design or artwork. The tool is theirs, and the drawing is theirs.
  • We do not quote a tooling price without the drawing. Cavity count, steel choice, surface finish and slide requirements all move the cost, so a number given without a drawing would be fiction.
  • We do not offer free tooling or lifetime mould ownership as a standard promise. Per-project tooling terms are set out in the quotation, and large programmes can amortise tooling across the order if that is the commercial structure the buyer wants.

Questions this project raises

How long does a new mould take?+

On this programme the tooling ran 45 days from drawing approval to first samples. That is a representative figure for a two-cavity jar tool rather than a universal one — cavity count, steel choice, surface finish and any slide requirements all move it, which is why it is quoted against a drawing.

Can I see the jar that was made?+

No. The tool and the design belong to the client, and the drawing is not ours to publish. What we can show a prospective buyer is the sequence: the recorded stock-mould search, the tool programme, the first-article approval, the inspection gates and the test reports that travel with the shipment.

Why PETG rather than PET for a jar?+

Thick-wall clarity. PETG can be run in heavier walls without the haze that develops in standard PET at the same thickness, which is what produces the glass-like look a premium jar needs. The trade-off is a lower heat ceiling — PETG is normally worked around 70–75 °C — so a hot-filled cream would need a different material.

What is an airless jar, and why specify one?+

An airless jar dispenses with a piston assembly rather than by the user dipping a finger into the product. It suits formulas that are sensitive to air and contamination, and it allows a measured dose. The cost is a more complex assembly and a closure that has to be designed together with the jar rather than chosen off a list.

Is tooling quoted separately from the bottle price?+

Yes. Tooling is quoted and invoiced separately from the unit price so a buyer can see exactly what the tool costs and what it buys. Where a programme is large enough, amortising tooling across the order is a conversation worth having.

Will you resell my mould to another customer?+

No. Custom tooling is made for the project and marked with the client’s own identification. That is also why we ask for an NDA before receiving technical drawings where a brand requires it — it is standard practice for us, not an unusual request.

What is the minimum order on a private-tool project?+

It is set by the tooling economics rather than by a published floor. On a stock-mould project orders start at 5,000 pcs in white, black or natural, or 10,000 pcs for custom colours; a new tool has to carry its own cost, so the first order is larger and is quoted per project.

What if I need two sizes in one range?+

That is what this project was. Two sizes were tooled, 30 ml and 50 ml, and the proportions were designed as a set so the two jars read as one family. Tooling two sizes costs more than one — the design work is where that cost is controlled or wasted.
