How to Buy Custom Plastic Bottles: The Four Levels of “Custom”
Custom means four different things at four different price points and four different lead times. Decide which level you actually need before anyone quotes tooling.
Start at level one and move up only when something specific forces you to
Decoration only, colour and closure, modified stock mould, or a new private tool. Each level buys you more control and costs you more time, more money and more quantity — and most projects are over-specified at the start.
The question is not "how custom can you make it". It is "what exactly can I not get from what already exists". Answering that honestly usually saves one tool and one sampling round, and it gets the product to market earlier with the same shelf presence.
This guide covers the commercial decision of how much customisation to buy. The design mechanics — capacity, diameter, height, shape and wall thickness — are on bottle design, and the tooling sequence is on tooling and moulds.
The four levels of custom, and what each one actually changes
Read down the left column and stop at the first level that solves your problem. Moving up a level is a decision about tooling, quantity and time, not about ambition.

A quick test: if the only difference between your bottle and a stock shape is what is printed on it or what colour it is, levels one and two will normally give you the same shelf result for a fraction of the commitment.
Seven questions have to be answered before a custom bottle can be quoted
These are not preferences. Each one changes a mould dimension, a material choice or a cost line, and an open answer here becomes a change order later.

The brief that makes a custom bottle quotable
Our custom development checklist names exactly what has to be settled. Items can be open — four open items is normal — but they have to be named as open rather than assumed.

- ☐Whether the closure is supplied by you or sourced as a matched assembly.
- ☐Any existing packaging that must stay compatible: carton, label, shelf tray, display.
- ☐Target height and diameter, or the constraints that set them.
- ☐Section and shape, and any brand feature that has to be moulded rather than printed.
- ☐Weight target, if there is one, and whether it is driven by cost, stiffness or feel.
- ☐First-order quantity and expected annual volume.
- ☐Material or recycled-content target, and any recycled-content claim planned on pack.
- ☐Decoration method and colour reference, with a masterbatch or Pantone sample where one exists.
- ☐Destination market, and any deadline the programme is working to.
The design choices that raise cost and risk, and the alternative
Blow moulding stretches a hot preform or parison against a cavity, so the wall ends up thinnest where the material is stretched hardest. Designs that ignore this come back as a tooling modification or a narrower process window.

What a usable drawing contains
Most quotation delay is not commercial. It is a drawing that cannot be measured, so the factory has to interpret it — and an interpreted quote becomes a different object from the one you thought you were buying.
A drawing we can quote from
- ▸Overall height and the height to the neck shoulder, both dimensioned.
- ▸Body diameter, and whether it is round, oval or a custom section.
- ▸Capacity: nominal fill volume and overflow capacity, with the fill height.
- ▸Neck finish code, plus thread specification and the neck land dimensions.
- ▸Weight target, and the wall-thickness expectation if it is critical.
- ▸Material, or the requirement that decides it.
- ▸A datum or a centreline, so dimensions are measured from the same origin.
- ▸A 3D file (STEP or IGES) where one exists — it removes interpretation entirely.

Colour and decoration: four decisions that are usually made too late
Decoration is where a stock bottle becomes your bottle, and it is also where quantity steps and setup passes appear. Settle these four before the sample is approved, not after.

What we run in-house: Silk screen (up to six colours), hot stamping, pressure-sensitive labelling, spray coating with matte, gloss, frosted, holographic and soft-touch finishes, pad printing and shrink-sleeve labelling all run in-house. Print adhesion is flame and water tested rather than assumed, and colour is judged against a physical master sample both sides hold. Decoration mechanics are on decoration and the decoration line.
Sampling and approval: what the round is actually for
Sampling is not a preview. It is the moment the mould, the material, the colour and the print are all proved together, and it is the reference the whole production run is held against.

From an existing mould, sampling typically runs 3–10 days. Where a new tool is required, the tool is cut and trialled first, and the schedule is quoted against your geometry rather than assumed from a range.
Measured, not judged by eye
The first shot off a new tool is measured against your drawing: capacity, weight within tolerance, wall thickness at four points per cavity, neck finish against your actual closure.
Decoration proofed
Print position, colour and adhesion are checked on the decorated sample, against the physical master sample.
You approve, in writing
Nothing enters mass production until a physical sample has been approved for shape, colour, finish and print. This is the single biggest protection against a costly mistake.
The approved sample is kept
The approved sample and the colour chip are archived so that a fourth reorder can be judged against the same object as the first.

Exclusivity, ownership and what is written rather than implied
Tooling terms are commercial terms, and commercial terms belong in a quotation rather than in a paragraph written to sound reassuring. Three points are worth agreeing explicitly.
What to put in writing
- ▸Whether the bottle is exclusive to your programme, and what that means: not resold and not reused for another customer.
- ▸Who owns the tool, the drawings and the print films, and what happens to them if the programme ends.
- ▸How the tooling charge is treated: quoted and invoiced separately from the unit price, so you can see what you are paying for and what it buys.
We do not advertise a free-mould programme or lifetime mould ownership. Any tooling charge, ownership position or transfer arrangement is a commercial term, and it is confirmed in writing against your specific project rather than offered as a standing policy. If your project depends on a tooling arrangement we cannot offer, we will say so at quotation stage instead of after the tool is cut.
The five mistakes that cost a custom bottle programme the most
- ▸Cutting the tool before the closure is fixed. The neck is decided by the closure, and a neck change after the tool exists means reworking the cavity.
- ▸Committing to a bespoke shape before checking the stock library. 2,000+ existing moulds cover a great many capacities and neck finishes, and a stock cavity carries no tooling charge.
- ▸Approving a sample against a photograph. A sample has to be measured and held, because approval sets the reference for every batch that follows.
- ▸Settling the colour after the sample. A colour change after approval restarts the round and can move the quantity step.
- ▸Designing the bottle before the carton. Carton footprint, label area and stacking load all constrain the geometry, and they are cheaper to change than a tool.

- ▸Capacity as a label claim, plus the fill height your line uses.
- ▸Neck finish code, or the closure you intend to fit.

- ▸Target colour with a Pantone reference, and any decoration method already decided.
- ▸First-order quantity, expected annual volume and the date it has to be on shelf.
- ▸Destination market, so the documents are prepared against it.
A physical sample communicates faster than a drawing. We measure capacity, neck finish and weight, then tell you whether a stock cavity is close enough or whether new tooling is the right answer.

Custom plastic bottles: buyer questions
How much does a custom bottle mould cost?+
It depends on the part, the cavity count and the material, so tooling is quoted per project rather than published as a price list. Send a drawing, a 3D file or a sample and you will get a tooling quotation with the schedule and the terms in writing, quoted separately from the unit price.
What is the minimum order for a custom bottle?+
Standard MOQ is 5,000 pieces per SKU, and custom-moulded bottles or special colour matches start at 10,000. A private tool also carries its own volume logic, because the tool has to be paid for by the run — which is why the quantity question and the tooling question are answered together.
Do I need a drawing to start?+
No. A clear set of images or a physical reference bottle is enough for us to measure capacity, neck finish and weight and to tell you what a tool for it would involve. A dimensioned drawing or a 3D file removes interpretation, and we confirm every dimension against a physical sample or a signed drawing before tooling starts.
Can you match a competitor bottle exactly?+
We can measure a physical sample and tell you what a tool for that geometry would involve. What we will not do is copy protected trade dress, and we will say so at quotation stage rather than after the tool is cut.
Can I start on a stock shape and move to a custom tool later?+
Yes, and it is often the cheaper route. Validating the formula, the closure and the decoration on a stock shape costs one sampling cycle and frequently saves a tool, because by the time you cut it the artwork and the volume are already settled.
How much customisation do I actually need?+
If the only difference from a stock shape is what is printed on it or what colour it is, decoration and colour on a stock cavity usually deliver the same shelf result for a fraction of the commitment. A private tool is for a shape no stock cavity provides, or for an exclusivity requirement.
Who owns the mould if I pay for it?+
Tooling charges, ownership and any transfer terms are commercial terms and are confirmed in writing against your specific project. A private mould is built and held in-house for your programme and is not resold or reused for another customer. We do not advertise a free-mould programme or lifetime mould ownership.
How long does a custom bottle take?+
Sampling from an existing mould typically runs 3–10 days from a confirmed brief. A new private mould is a longer programme because the tool has to be designed, cut, trialled and sampled first, and it is quoted with its tooling cost and its tooling schedule rather than assumed from a range.
