What PP is, and where it wins

PP (polypropylene) is a semi-translucent, milky-white polyolefin that resists heat, impact and a wide pH range. That combination is why it sits behind almost every cap, pump, sprayer and flip-top we make, and why it is the material specified for closures, jars and hot-fill-adjacent products.

PP is not a clarity material — it tops out at semi-transparent frosted or matte — so it is rarely the choice for a bottle that has to sell on what is visible inside. It is the choice where the pack has to survive heat, keep a closure working after hundreds of cycles, or hold a formulation that attacks other polymers.

Why PP leads on closures and heat

Two properties explain most PP specifications: it keeps its shape at temperatures that soften PET and PETG, and it holds a thread and a hinge through repeated use. A flip-top cap that fails after forty openings is a PP grade and tooling problem, not a design fashion.

The number to ask for

For PP, as with PE, the resin is specified by melt flow index (MFI) and density, reported per lot on the COA. For closures, the grade and the tooling together decide thread strength, hinge life and dimensional consistency — which is why we quote a closure and its bottle neck as a matched pair.

Applications

Typical PP applications

PP is specified wherever heat, chemistry or repeated opening is the constraint. Within our range that means closures first, then jars and heat-resistant packs.

  • Closures and caps — ribbed, smooth, child-resistant and tamper-evident designs from 18 mm to 38 mm.
  • Pumps and dispensers — lotion pumps, foam pumps, mist and trigger sprayers.
  • Flip-top and disc caps — where hinge life is the specification.
  • Cream jars — PP and PET jars from 15 g to 300 g for cream, mask and scrub formats.
  • Heat-resistant and hot-fill-adjacent packs — where the fill temperature excludes PET and PETG.
  • Bottles for chemical-resistant products — extrusion blown in a single step.

When PP is not the answer

If the pack has to sell on transparency, PP will not deliver it — go to PET or PETG. If the brief needs a soft squeezable feel, LDPE or MDPE in the PE family is more appropriate. PP is the material for the functional parts: what the cap has to do, and what the heat has to survive.

Manufacturing

How PP is molded at Shijin

PP bottles are extrusion blown in a single step on the same PE / PP lines that run our PE range. Closures, pumps and jars are injection molded, then matched to the bottle neck and verified as an assembly before shipment. That is what keeps a cap and a bottle from arriving as two independently correct parts that do not fit.

What changes the specification

  • MFI grade. Hinge life and thread strength are sensitive to the grade, and the grade has to match the tooling.
  • Surface treatment before printing. PP is non-polar, so flame or corona treatment to at least 38 dynes/cm is required before ink or label adhesive will hold. We verify with the ASTM D3359 cross-hatch test targeting 4B to 5B.
  • Whole-assembly verification. Bottle, closure and dispenser are sampled together, so what you approve is the pack the customer receives, not three separate parts.
  • Colour matched on a physical sample. Masterbatch colour is confirmed against your Pantone reference with a physical sample before mass production starts.

Resin and documentation controls

  • Prime virgin resin only for cosmetic and personal-care work — a single heat history, full data sheet and full COA. That is a different material from wide-spec off-grade, post-industrial regrind (PIR), post-consumer recycle (PCR) or in-house rework.
  • Per-lot Certificate of Analysis. Intrinsic viscosity and ash content for PET and PETG; melt flow index (MFI), density and ash content for PE and PP (ISO 3451 / ASTM D5630).
  • Two-way traceability. Resin lot → work order → finished-goods lot, walkable in both directions, so a question about a shipment eighteen months later can be answered.
  • In-process and outgoing inspection. Wall thickness at four points per cavity, weight tolerance ±2%, visual defect inspection every 30 minutes, then AQL 2.5, a 1.2 m drop test, air-pressure leak testing on all closures and a QC report per lot.

For food-contact and cosmetic work we test to EU 10/2011 (overall migration limit 10 mg/dm², plus specific migration limits and a NIAS risk assessment) and frame cosmetics against EC 1223/2009. Decoration uses low-migration UV-cured inks aligned with the Swiss Ordinance SR 817.023.21 and the Nestlé packaging ink guidance, with surface energy verified before printing and adhesion checked by ASTM D3359 cross-hatch at 4B–5B.

PP and the recycling stream

PP is recyclable and is collected in many municipal streams, though collection rules vary by market. It is a straightforward material for a recyclability claim provided the claim is checked against the market the product sells in.

  • Closures count. On a PET or HDPE bottle, the closure is often PP — worth knowing if a brand is calculating a single-material or mono-material claim.
  • Jars and rigid packs collect better than small loose closures, which is a practical argument for keeping the pack rigid.
  • Check the label and the liner too. A recyclability claim is about the whole pack, not just its largest part.

PP packaging: buyer questions

What is PP used for in packaging?+

Closures, caps, pumps, sprayers, flip-tops and jars, plus bottles where heat resistance or chemical resistance is the constraint. PP resists heat, impact and a wide pH range, which is why it carries almost every cap and dispenser we ship.

Is PP clearer than PET?+

No. PP is semi-translucent and milky white at best, while PET and PETG are glass-like. If the pack has to show the fill, PP is not the material — and it has never been presented otherwise.

Can PP take a hot fill?+

PP has the highest heat resistance of the materials we run and is the standard alternative to heat-set PET when a fill temperature exceeds what PET can take. The bottle wall, the closure and its liner still have to be specified for the temperature.

What neck sizes are available for PP closures?+

Closures from 18 mm to 38 mm, plus wide-mouth jar formats. Neck finishes across the range include 18/415, 20/410, 24/410, 28/410 and 28/415, with custom finishes on new tooling.

Can you match a Pantone colour in PP?+

Yes. Colour is matched in-house with masterbatch and confirmed on a physical sample against your Pantone reference before mass production. Minimums are 5,000 pcs for white, black and natural closures, and higher for custom colours.

How do you make sure the cap fits the bottle?+

We specify the neck finish and the closure as a matched pair, then sample the assembled pack. Buying a bottle from one supplier and a closure from another is the single most common cause of leaks and rework.

Is PP recyclable?+

Yes, PP is recyclable and is collected in many municipal streams, though rules vary by market. On a PET or HDPE bottle the closure is often PP, which is worth accounting for if you are calculating a single-material claim.
