PCR HDPE Packaging: Recycled HDPE for Cleaning and Industrial Packs
Post-consumer recycled HDPE. The colour cast that limits recycled content in clear PET costs nothing here, because the pack was never clear to begin with.
What PCR HDPE is, and why it is the easier recycled specification
PCR HDPE is HDPE made with post-consumer recycled feedstock. Compared with recycled content in a clear pack, it is the more forgiving specification: HDPE is opaque anyway, so the colour cast and haze that make PCR PET unsuitable for clarity-led briefs cost almost nothing in a cleaning, detergent or industrial pack.
The recycled polymer keeps the properties the material was specified for — chemical resistance, moisture barrier and stress-crack performance — and it runs on the same extrusion blow molding route as virgin HDPE. The content level is quoted per order with the documentation that goes with it.
What recycled content does, and does not, change in HDPE
HDPE is graded by density — 0.941–0.965 g/cm³ for the high-density end of the polyethylene family — and recycled feedstock does not change that classification. What it changes is the incoming resin control and the documents issued with the finished goods.
| Property | Virgin HDPE | PCR HDPE | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density | 0.941 – 0.965 g/cm³ | Within the HDPE range | Still specified and reported by grade |
| Appearance | Opaque | Opaque, often with a darker or grey tone | The cast is largely invisible in an opaque pack |
| Chemical resistance | High | High | Retained — the reason cleaning packs are the natural fit |
| Moisture barrier | Very good | Very good | Retained, subject to the grade selected |
| Melt flow index | Reported per lot on the COA | Reported per lot on the COA | The number that governs how the resin molds |
| Processing route | Extrusion blow molding | The same EBM route | Tooling, necks and closure matching unchanged |
Because the pack is opaque, the grade can also be tinted with masterbatch to a solid colour, which removes the need to expose the natural tone of the recycled resin at all.
Typical PCR HDPE applications
PCR HDPE is specified where a recycled-content commitment meets a pack that was never clarity-led. In practice that means cleaning, detergent and industrial formats, plus personal-care packs that use an opaque body.
- ▸Cleaning and detergent bottles — the strongest fit: aggressive fills, opaque bodies, large volumes.
- ▸Body wash and shower products — opaque personal-care formats where the pack lives in a wet environment.
- ▸Trigger spray and pour bottles — for cleaners, disinfectants and sanitising products.
- ▸Bulk and large-format containers — where impact resistance and a moisture barrier outrank appearance.
- ▸Industrial and automotive fluid packs — chemical tolerance with a recycled-content claim attached.
- ▸Tinted and solid-colour opaque packs — where masterbatch is used to set a brand colour over the recycled grade.
A pack that has to show the fill. PCR HDPE is opaque and stays opaque; clarity is simply not available in this material.
A very light or white opaque pack where the recycled tone will read through. Confirm on a physical sample before committing to the colour.
A pack with no recycled-content commitment behind it. PCR adds specification and documentation work, and it needs a reason.
How PCR HDPE is run and evidenced
PCR HDPE is extrusion blown in a single step on the same PE / PP lines that run our PE range. The mold, neck finish, closure matching and decoration route are unchanged; what changes is incoming resin control and the paperwork issued with the order.
Resin and documentation controls
- ▸Incoming resin and COA. Melt flow index, density and ash content reported per lot, exactly as for virgin HDPE.
- ▸Content level stated on the order. The recycled content percentage is a line on the specification, so it can be reproduced across reorders rather than drifting.
- ▸Two-way traceability. Resin lot → work order → finished-goods lot, walkable in both directions.
- ▸Colour approval on a physical sample. Because the recycled grade carries a tone, the final colour is approved on a sample against your reference before mass production.
For food-contact and cosmetic work we test to EU 10/2011 (overall migration limit 10 mg/dm², plus specific migration limits and a NIAS risk assessment) and frame cosmetics against EC 1223/2009. Decoration uses low-migration UV-cured inks aligned with the Swiss Ordinance SR 817.023.21 and the Nestlé packaging ink guidance, with surface energy verified before printing and adhesion checked by ASTM D3359 cross-hatch at 4B–5B.
The document that matters for recycled content
For recycled content, the evidence is a GRS Transaction Certificate naming your product and lot. An annual GRS scope certificate only proves the factory was audited; it does not evidence the content of the goods you received. We do not present a scope certificate as proof of content.
Advantages of PCR HDPE, and the limits that go with them
- ▸The colour cast that limits PCR in clear packs is largely invisible here
- ▸Chemical resistance and moisture barrier are retained
- ▸Runs on the same EBM tooling as virgin HDPE — no new mold required
- ▸Low cost per kilogram and strong bulk economics
- ▸A documented recycled-content specification quoted per order
- ▸Tintable with masterbatch to a solid brand colour
- ▸Opaque only — clarity is not available in this material
- ▸A natural darker or grey tone that must be accounted for in light colours
- ▸Grade availability and content level vary, so each order is quoted individually
- ▸Documentation is per lot and has to be requested for each order
- ▸Not suitable for premium or clarity-led briefs
PCR HDPE and the recycling loop
HDPE is one of the two most widely collected packaging polymers, which makes it a practical feedstock for a recycled-content claim rather than a nominal one.
- ▸Opaque packs recycle without a penalty. The optical limit that constrains PCR in clear PET never applies here, which is why cleaning and industrial formats lead on recycled content.
- ▸Design for the loop. A rigid, single-material pack with a closure that separates is worth more in the loop than a mixed-material one.
- ▸Ask for the transaction certificate. A GRS Transaction Certificate naming your product and lot is the document that evidences content. A scope certificate does not.
PCR HDPE against PCR PET and virgin HDPE
| Property | PCR HDPE | PCR PET | Virgin HDPE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recycled feedstock | Post-consumer HDPE | Post-consumer PET | None |
| Clarity | Opaque | Low to medium, grey or green cast | Opaque |
| Colour cast impact | Minimal in an opaque pack | Visible in a clear pack | — |
| Best-fit packs | Cleaning, detergent, industrial, opaque body care | Tinted and opaque bottles, trigger sprays | Aggressive fills, bulk packs |
| Consider when | A recycled-content target exists on an opaque pack | A recycled-content target exists and the pack can absorb the cast | Chemical resistance and toughness lead |
Suitable recycled-content products
PCR content is specified on top of an existing mold rather than through a separate mold library, so the formats below are the ones that carry it well. Tell us the target content level and we will confirm the colour on a sample.

PCR HDPE: buyer questions
What does PCR HDPE mean?+
HDPE made with post-consumer recycled feedstock. Density stays within the HDPE range, appearance stays opaque, and chemical resistance and moisture barrier are retained. The content level is quoted per order.
Is PCR HDPE easier to specify than PCR PET?+
Yes, in optical terms. HDPE is opaque anyway, so the colour cast and haze that rule PCR PET out of clarity-led briefs cost almost nothing here. That is why cleaning, detergent and industrial formats lead on recycled content.
How do I prove the recycled content in my order?+
Ask for a GRS Transaction Certificate naming your product and lot. An annual GRS scope certificate only proves the factory was audited; it does not evidence the content of the goods you received.
Can a PCR HDPE pack be a light colour?+
It can be tinted with masterbatch, but the natural tone of the recycled grade sits underneath, so light colours need approving on a physical sample before you commit. Solid and darker colours are the simpler route.
Does recycled content change the tooling?+
No. PCR HDPE is extrusion blown on the same route as virgin HDPE, so the mold, neck finish and closure matching are unchanged. What changes is incoming resin control and the documents issued with the order.
Which formulations suit PCR HDPE?+
Cleaning, detergent, sanitising and industrial fills — the same aggressive formulations that already specify HDPE for chemical resistance. The recycled content does not change that recommendation.
What is the minimum order for PCR HDPE?+
5,000 pcs per SKU on stock tooling, in line with our other materials. Content level and grade availability are confirmed at quotation.
Is PCR HDPE recyclable again?+
Yes. HDPE is one of the two most widely collected packaging polymers, and an opaque rigid pack with a closure that separates is straightforward to process. That is exactly why recycled content works well in this family.
