Cosmetic Bottle Production Lead Time

What each stage actually takes — sampling, tooling, first production and repeat runs — and the information that shortens the clock.

Quick answer

Sampling from an existing mould normally runs 3–10 days from a confirmed brief.

A custom tool is quoted with its own programme: sample to approved production mould in 15–30 days.

Mass production after sample approval: about 20–25 days for a first order, 12–15 days for repeat orders.

FOB Shenzhen is the default term; CIF to your port or DDP for the EU are available.

The timeline, stage by stage

Four stages between a brief and a shipped carton

A bottle order is not one step. It is a short chain, and each link has its own clock. Knowing which link you are on tells you the realistic date.

  • ▸Brief and quote — you send specs; we return a quote and a timeline.
  • ▸Sampling — a physical sample proves shape, colour, finish and print before any commitment.
  • ▸Tooling and approval — for a custom shape, the production mould is cut and proven.
  • ▸Mass production and shipping — the run is held against the approved sample, then packed and dispatched.

Sampling: 3–10 days from a stock mould

From an existing mould, a physical sample is normally ready in 3–10 days from a confirmed brief. This includes cavity machining for custom shapes where the base mould is already in the library. Nothing enters mass production until a physical sample has been approved for shape, colour, finish and print.

Custom tooling: 15–30 days to a proven mould

A private mould is quoted together with its tooling, because the tool is amortised over the run. The typical programme runs sample to an approved production mould in 15–30 days depending on complexity. The quote states the programme before tooling starts, so the date is agreed up front rather than discovered later.

Mass production after sample approval

Once the sample and colour chip are signed off, the production window opens. Volumes are scheduled as longer, steadier batches; the run is held against the approved sample so what ships matches what was approved.

What moves the lead time

FactorEffect on the timeline
Mould routeStock mould is fastest; a private tool adds its own programme.
Order quantityVolume sets the production window, not the sampling window.
DecorationPrint, stamp, label and coat are line passes scheduled after mould approval.
Artwork and colourApproved artwork and a physical colour chip remove re-work loops.
Peak seasonCapacity tightens around major holiday production cycles.

Rush and repeat orders

Repeat and small runs can often be pulled forward once tooling and artwork are on file. We will state what is realistic rather than promise a date the plant cannot meet — a slipped date costs more than an honest one.

FBA and door-to-door

For FBA-bound orders, FBA-compliant labelling (FNSKU barcodes, prep) is handled in-house and typical door-to-door time is 25–30 days including freight and customs handling. Air freight is available for urgent or repeat orders at a higher cost.

Information that shortens the clock

Checklist

Send these with the brief

The specification
  • ☐Material, capacity, neck finish and closure.
  • ☐Colour reference (Pantone or masterbatch sample) and decoration.
  • ☐Order quantity and whether this is a trial or a roll-out.
Proof points
  • ☐A dimensioned drawing or a reference bottle removes assumptions.
  • ☐The approved sample and colour chip from any earlier round.

Common mistakes that add weeks

Red flags
  • ▸Asking for a date before the mould route is decided — stock, modified stock or private tool change the answer completely.
  • ▸Approving artwork only after mass production starts, which forces a re-run.
  • ▸Treating sampling and production as one number when they are two different clocks.

What to send us

Next step

What to send us

  • ▸Your specification: material, capacity, neck, closure, colour, decoration, quantity.
  • ▸A drawing or reference bottle, and any approved sample from an earlier round.
  • ▸The destination market, because documents and lead time both follow from it.

A complete brief returns a date tied to your mould and quantity, not a generic promise.

FAQ

Production lead time: common questions

How long does sampling take?+

From a stock mould, a physical sample is normally ready in 3–10 days from a confirmed brief. A new custom tool is a longer programme and is quoted with its own timeline.

How long is mass production after sample approval?+

About 20–25 days for a first order and 12–15 days for repeat orders, held against the approved sample and colour chip.

How long does a custom mould take?+

Sample to an approved production mould typically runs 15–30 days depending on complexity; the quote states the programme before tooling starts.

Can lead time be rushed?+

Repeat and small runs can often be pulled forward; we will say what is realistic rather than promise a date the plant cannot meet.

Does order quantity change the lead time?+

Volume sets the production window, not the sampling window. Larger runs are scheduled as longer, steadier batches.

What is the FBA or door-to-door time?+

For FBA-bound orders, door-to-door is typically 25–30 days including freight and customs handling.

Does decoration add time?+

Silk screen, hot stamp, labelling and coating are line passes scheduled after mould approval, so they extend the production window rather than the sampling window.

What should I send to get an accurate date?+

The 14-point brief: material, capacity, neck, closure, colour, decoration, quantity, application, formula, mould route, market, sample need and artwork. A drawing or reference bottle removes the assumptions that make dates slip.

Plan around the real lead time

Production lead time bottles depends on whether you sample an existing mold or start a custom bottle lead time with new tooling. This page breaks both paths down so the timeline is clear before you order.
